Plantagenet Mount Barker Shiraz with Luscious cherry and blackberry aromas will greet the nose, wrapped with chocolate and vanilla. Underlying spicy, peppery and tobacco notes abound that distinguish Shiraz from this region. A silky, textural palate with layered complexity, fine powder tannins and long berry flavours coated with lingering spicy cherry flavours.
Fruit is sourced from the Wyjup and Bouverie vineyards with a small portion sourced from their oldest grower - Charleston vineyard. All the vineyards grow on free draining gravel loams around the Mt Barker area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.
A late start to the season due to mild spring and summer weather. After a cool, wet spring and early summer, a dry period from February to April followed allowing flavours to intensify in a relatively disease and pestilence free environment. Mild sunny days were the norm during veraison with a few typically chilly days scattered throughout the growing season as well. Harvest of the reds occurred between the 1st to 18th April; a month where they enjoyed lovely Indian summer weather which ensured fruit was harvested with tip top ripeness.
The wine underwent a ten day ferment, with very gentle maceration during fermentation at moderately warm temperatures and gentle slow pressing. The wines structure was enhanced with the use of 40% new tight grain, French oak and was aged for 18 months before blending, filtration and bottling.
