What is E171 (Titanium Dioxide)?

E171 is a white food colouring used in many foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to enhance brightness and opacity. E171 reflects up to 96% of visible light, which makes products appear brighter, whiter or sparkly and the small particle size also contributes to a smooth, glossy, and reflective finish, which is why it is often used to create a sparkling appearance in products such as an edible lustre or glitter.

Why do E171 Free Products Look Duller?

When a product is E171 free an alternative whitener such as E170 (Calcium Carbonate), a colorant such as E172 (Iron Oxides and Hydroxides) or carrier such as E555 (Potassium Aluminium Silicate) are often used. These alternative colourants or carriers do not scatter light as efficiently which can result in a less bright, more matte or duller appearance.
